Course Descriptions
Ø
Psychological First Aid: (4
hours) Provides a framework for understanding the
factors that affect stress responses in disaster
relief workers and the clients they serve.
Recommended: Fulfilling Our Mission and
Working with Total Diversity. Recommended
for all DAT members!
Ø
ERVs: Ready, Set, Roll:
(Self Study + 3 hours) Provides learners with the
opportunity to learn about and use an Emergency
Response Vehicle (ERV) and all related equipment.
The course consists of two parts that participants
must complete: a video-driven self-study portion
and an ERV orientation and road test.
Participants must have a valid driver’s license,
proof of car insurance, taken a defensive driving
course (Chapter offers an online course if needed),
and sign an authorization form for the Chapter to
obtain a Department of Motor Vehicles report.
Prerequisite: Mass Care Overview. Recommended:
Logistics Overview.

Logistics: An Overview: (4
hours) Provides participants with an overview of the
Material Support Services group and the activities
associated with it. Prerequisite: Fulfilling
Our Mission.
Ø
Logistics Simulation: (4
hours) Simulation designed to provide learners with
the opportunity to practice using skills and
knowledge from Logistics: An Overview.
Prerequisite: Logistics: An Overview.
Ø
Serving People with Disabilities
Following a Disaster: (8 hours) Outlines
American Red Cross policies and practices as they
pertain to providing services to people with
disabilities following a disaster.
Prerequisite: Fulfilling Our Mission and online
component (45 min).
Ø
Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment:
(8 hours = 4 hrs. online & 4 hrs. instructor-led)
Introduces the critical role of disaster assessment,
explore related preparedness tasks, learn how to
collect and communicate disaster assessment
information, & become familiar w/how disaster
assessment info supports management and service
delivery decisions. Prerequisite: Online
Class – Recommended: Fulfilling Our Mission.

Blended Learning – First Aid/CPR/AED
– Prepares individuals to respond to
life-threatening emergencies through a combination
of two sessions. Session 1 is online and includes a
final exam, which may be taken up to two times.
After successful completion of Session 1 (a passing
score on the final exam), the participant will need
to complete Session 2, which is instructor-led and
allows for skills practice and demonstration of
competence. The participant is responsible for
calling the local Chapter to register for Session 2
through Health & Safety. Only after the successful
completion of both sessions will an official
certificate be issued. The Chapter must initiate
enrollment in the online course in order to avoid
the course fee.
DISASTER SERVICES MEETING SCHEDULE – 1st &
2nd QUARTERS, FY 2009
Meetings are held once each
month (with the exceptions of June and December) for
all disaster volunteers and potential new disaster
volunteers. Attendance at all meetings is
not required; however, regular attendance is
encouraged. Meetings are held at the Pickens
Service Center office at 509 South Lewis Street,
Pickens, SC.
